Lunging Equipment

Lunging is a horse training method where the trainer, holding a lunge line, asks the horse to move through different gaits. It is also the basis of the sport of vaulting. A lunge line (made of cotton or nylon) is snapped onto a halter, bridle or cavesson. Lunge lines can be of various lengths, but most are about 10 m long. This allows the horse to work in a 20 m circle. Trainers can also use a lunge whip, side reins, a surcingle, or a saddle. The lunge whip is used to encourage the horse to move forward. Side reins, attached from a surcingle or saddle to a bridle or cavesson, act like the reins on a bridle. Historically, trainers would use the lunge line with a chain to control more difficult horses, but today’s natural approach to horse training uses chainless lunge lines. Horses are lunged to warm-up before competition, as a form of exercise, to on-ground training methods, and to keep the horse in a consistent sized circle for vaulting riders to perform their exercises on horseback. You will find a wide range of lunging equipment on our website to meet your lunging needs.
